GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio — August update

The August 2025 update to Visual Studio brings a smarter Copilot, MCP general availability, and more control.

Highlights

Here’s what’s new with GitHub Copilot in Visual Studio 2022 (v17.14):

  • GPT-5 model support: Use GPT-5 to leverage more powerful, accurate, and context-aware code suggestions and chat experiences directly in Visual Studio.

  • MCP support is now generally available: Connect your entire stack with MCP. Get started with one-click server installation and secure integrated sign in.

  • Smarter Copilot Chat with better context: Access a smarter Copilot Chat that retrieves your most relevant code snippets and understands your Git history

  • Bring your own model: Connect your own models to Visual Studio Chat using API keys from OpenAI, Google, or Anthropic.

  • Sign up with Google: Sign up for GitHub Copilot directly from Visual Studio — now with your Google account.

  • Greater control over Copilot suggestions: Choose when Copilot completions should appear, decide when to access next edit suggestions, and accept completions partially word-by-word or line-by-line.
