OpenAI GPT-4.1 is now generally available in GitHub Copilot as the new default model

Starting today, OpenAI’s GPT-4.1 is rolling out as the new default model for Copilot Chat, Edits, and agent mode. This is an upgrade from GPT-4o. OpenAI has optimized GPT-4.1 for real-world use based on direct developer feedback and has major gains in coding, instruction following, and understanding to make it ideal for common development tasks. GPT-4o will remain available in the model picker, but it will be deprecated in 90 days.

General availability extends indemnification for IP infringement to code generated using this model. Vision requests are also supported but remain in preview.
